PEPTALK Media is a not-for-profit organisation which creates innovative resources to educate and empower kiwis with the skills to build and nurture a resilient, healthy mind. We believe this upstream, protective approach of helping people to help themselves, and others, is a powerful way to transform the future of mental health in New Zealand.

How we engage, educate, empower and inspire New Zealanders.

  • Engage

We’re exposed to as much information in one day as our ancestors in the fifteenth century would encounter in a lifetime - BBC.com, 2013

Our resources are presented in a visually appealing, bite-sized and engaging format, making the information we share highly digestible and stand out from the mass of information you encounter each day.

  • Empower

PEPTALK was launched in response to observing increased dependency and a focus on an ‘ambulance at the bottom of the cliff’ approach to tackling a growing mental health crisis.

Our approach is to build self-efficiency by empowering people with the skills and tools to help themselves, and others, thrive.

  • Educate

“The skills for wellbeing are teachable and learnable” - Dr Martin Seligman

Over two decades of research shows that the skills for wellbeing are teachable and learnable. When we practice these skills, not only do we feel good and function well, we give ourselves greater protection from mental illness.

We educate by presenting information that is evidence-based and comes from the latest research in the field of positive psychology / wellbeing science.

  • Inspire

“Wellbeing” has become a real buzz-word, but it’s not enough just to talk about it. We are passionate about making wellbeing real and actionable.

We inspire our readers and users to put what they learn into practice, with real life success stories, practical strategies, exercises, and worksheets.

PEPTALK story.

Founder Nadine Hickman

Kia ora I’m Nadine, the founder and editor of PEPTALK. My own walk from mental illness to mental wellness taught me many lessons about how (both) powerfully destructive and powerfully constructive the mind can be. Along the way I learned the skills to use my mind in positive ways and help myself be and stay mentally well.

A few years ago, as the media began to report regularly about our mental health crisis, I felt frustrated that there seemed to be a focus on treatment services, with very little resources going towards teaching people the skills to help themselves psychologically thrive. I could see a growing culture of dependency in our society.

I then discovered the science of wellbeing. Inspired by my own experiences and knowing that two decades of research shows that the skills for wellbeing are teachable and learnable, I felt determined to present the skills for wellbeing in a way that engaged others and inspired them to put them into practice.

With a background in magazine publishing, I set about creating the first issue of PEPTALK. It was met with widespread praise and we continue to receive ongoing messages about how our publication is helping people all around New Zealand. These messages continually fuel my fire to increase our readership and help thousands of Kiwis build a healthy, resilient mind.

Although the anguish of mental illness was the seed that planted my fascination with the power of the mind, it is the joy of mental wellness that now drives me towards a vision where all New Zealanders have a tool box of strategies they can use to help themselves feel good and function well, in good times and through life's challenges.

HOW MUCH CONTROL DO WE HAVE OVER OUR

HAPPINESS?

Science has taken happiness from a fluffy concept to a legitimate and worthwhile goal.

Did you know that research shows that 40% of our happiness is determined by the way we think and our intentional actions?

Many people put a lot of energy and effort into changing their circumstances because they feel this will lead to greater levels of happiness. But this often leads to frustration, because our circumstances in life only equate to 10% of our happiness.

PEPTALK teaches you evidence-based mental strategies and skills that will help you to harness your 40% zone of power to build a healthy mind, and increase happiness and life satisfaction.

What does it mean to be psychologically thriving?

Science shows that when we are mentally flourishing we are :

  • More patient/tolerant
  • More joyful
  • Energised
  • More optimistic
  • More motivation
  • More confident
  • More courageous

By thinking and acting in certain ways, it is possible to take life in our stride, in good times and even when life is challenging, stressful, overwhelming, or when we are facing adversity or trauma. PEPTALK takes the best gems from experts and science to show you how.
